Meet James Biery

The Session and Minister of Music Search Committee are pleased to welcome James Biery as our next Minister of Music.

James Biery is currently the Director of Music at the Cathedral of St. Paul in St. Paul, Minnesota, a position he held since 1996. Jim was featured regularly as a performer on the Cathedral’s monthly concerts. He has also directed music programs in Nebraska, Illinois and Connecticut.

Jim was born in England in 1956, while his father, a U.S. Air Force officer, was stationed at High Wycombe. A year later his family returned to Nebraska, where he lived through his high school years, studying the organ at First Central Congregational Church in Omaha. He is a Pi Kappa Lambda graduate of Northwestern University with Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Organ Performance. He also holds the Choirmaster and Fellowship Certificates of the American Guild of Organists. In 1986 he was awarded the Fellowship certificate after receiving the highest score in the nation on the exam. Jim was also the Director of the Minnesota Compline Choir, a Twin Cities-based men’s choir. As an organist, Jim has performed much of the repertoire of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His facility at the organ combined with his demonstrated ability to study a vast amount of literature has given him a firm basis upon which to compose as well. His organ and choral compositions are available from many publishers, including MorningStar, Concordia, and Augsburg-Fortress.
