Caring for Creation

As with many other organizations in the 21st Century, GPMC is well aware that HOW we do our work is important to the work we do.  In our case, as followers of Jesus Christ who believe that we have been entrusted with the care of God's Earth (not ours!), our stewardship of environmental resources is a statement of faith.  Moreover, given all that we know about the interconnectedness of life on earth, it is also a statement about the value we place on fellow human beings.

In the last three years, GPMC has taken the following steps as part of its growing awareness of our environmental stewardship responsibilities.

     Using only 100% recycled paper

Relying more and more on digital material and transmission of that material

Recycling paper, plastic and other products from our office

     Serving organic, shade grown coffee

Creating and distributing reusable shopping bags

     Eliminating styrofoam from our pantries

     Using biodegradable cutlery and cups

Using paper plates made from paper waste

Using only organic fertilizer on our lawn and only occasionally

Offering ourselves as a drop-off point for electronic recycling

In addition to our internal administrative practices, we have also featured 2 Caring for Creation Sundays that included educational fairs and liturgy focused on caring for creation. In the summer of 2010 our worship focused on sustainability, cutting back on the power we used, the paper consumed, and lifting up the importance of alternative means of transportation to church.

We also continue to offer adult education and children's classes focused on our relationship to all of God's creation.
