Christian Service of Marriage
Congratulations and Welcome!
At Grosse Pointe Memorial Church (GPMC), weddings are joyful occasions for the worship of God. Our church is open for GPMC member weddings only and the staff here are eager to help make your wedding a lovely and meaningful event.
If you are not a member, we invite you to visit our congregation and get to know us. Our new members range from young couples to senior singles and everyone in between. Please call our office: 313.882.5330 and speak with our new membership department to learn more about GPMC and to attend one of our new member meetings. We ask all new members to be with the church for at least six months and to also meet with the Pastor before setting a wedding date.
The Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) says the following about marriage and weddings in the church:
Marriage is a gift God has given to all humankind for the well-being of the entire human family. Marriage is a civil contract between a woman and a man. For Christians, marriage is a covenant through which a man and a woman offer vows before God to live out together their lives of discipleship. In a service of Christian marriage, a lifelong commitment is made by a woman and a man to each other, publicly witnessed and acknowledged by the community of faith.
The Christian marriage ceremony is a service of worship before God, normally conducted within the church. Dignity will be expected on the part of all present, and the service shall be under the sole direction of the presiding minister.
Couples who are members of GPMC and wish to be married at the church should contact Carol Wood for wedding forms and to set up an interview with a pastor (who may or may not be officiating at the service). This meeting will be scheduled as an essential prerequisite to booking the wedding. That is, before your wedding will be put on the calendar you must meet with one of our pastors for approval.
We wish you every joy and blessing as you prepare for your wedding day and your future life together within the Christian community.
Yours in Christ,
The Rev. Peter J. M. Henry, Pastor – Head of Staff
