The Adult Mission Trip is packing for Cuba on February 7. They will bring a bit of GPMC with them when they go by bringing items that are hard to come by in Cuba. We are looking for school and office supplies, craft supplies, hygiene supplies, and tools. Some of the supplies are easy for anyone to get – even found in your closets right now. Others, like some specific liturgical items, musical supplies, tools and copier needs will be purchased with your donations. So both kinds of donations are welcome! Lists are available HERE or in the lobby and our Cuba travelers will be available at middle hour in Fellowship Hall to talk about those special needs or accept your financial donation. Your donated items can be brought to the lobby coat room until February 4. Thank you for helping share GPMC generosity with the Juan G Hall Presbyterian Church in Cuba.
Do You Like to Cook for 200 people? Here’s your chance!
On Sunday Dec. 3, we will be preparing 50 gallons of beef vegetable soup and 400 ham and cheese sandwiches for the homeless population at Crossroads of Michigan.
We began this tradition in 2009 and we need you to help us in this continuing mission. We need 18 volunteers to prepare the meal and 18 volunteers to serve.
We have many members who attend this joyous event every year but would like to see a few new faces. Volunteers preparing the meal must be no younger than 16 but younger families are encouraged to be part of the serving.
Sign-up at the front desk to be sure you’re included. We have carpooling available – here’s your chance to ride in the lovely new church van!!
Contact Mary Garlough for additional information – firstname.lastname@example.org
Beginning in November, GPMC is back at Spirit of Hope to serve a monthly lunch. This is a unique opportunity in the City of Detroit to serve a meal restaurant-style, affording an extra layer of dignity and respect to those in need. Whether you have done this before or not, we need your help especially in November. Newbies are welcome too. As part of our welcome back to the fold,
We are serving TWO meals in November: on the 2nd and 5th Wednesdays. Any day you can help, it is appreciated.
We are helping with the Thanksgiving meal too – Please deliver those Turkeys!
GPMC is in charge of donating and cooking 40 turkeys for Thanksgiving at Everyone Eats this year. Once again, GPMC is partnering with Brownell Middle School to cook and carve the turkeys, but we need your help. Could you donate an uncooked 12-15 lb turkey anytime between November 1 and November 13th? Please let Debbie Bellovich know that you are donating a turkey (email@example.com) and drop it off at the Brownell Middle School office. Let them know it’s for Taylor Barczyk or email Debbie and she can pick it up.
To help at Everyone Eats meet at GPMC at 10:45 am or Spirit of Hope at 11:15-11:30 am. We serve lunch from 12-1 pm. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to let her know you can help.
We need you back! We want you back! See you there!
Spirit of Hope is at 1519 Martin Luther King Blvd, Detroit, MI 48202
Our regular monthly day will be every second Wednesday – year round. Mark your calendars now.
We are pleased to welcome back guests from Cass Community Social Services to use our church as their “home” for the week of November 4-11. We are anticipating providing shelter and three meals a day for 25 women and 15 men this year. We have our own Men’s Bible Study and TUXIS hosting dinners and our Women’s Bible Study hosting breakfasts. We have movie nights, music nights, bingo nights, and a magician arranged. Five other churches will come to make and serve dinners. And we need more……
Because this event doesn’t work without YOU! You can sign up to be a host (we need 56 of you), to donate breakfast and lunch items, to donate hygiene items, or to donate Bingo prizes. You’ll find Outreach members at middle hour every Sunday in October with the lists of volunteers. Please join us.
One week only. Tuesday, October 17 – Tuesday, October 24.
No kid should have a Halloween party without a costume. There will be a box in the coat room off the lobby for your new or gently used costume in any size from infant thru adult. We’ll deliver them to Matrix on Wednesday October 25 for the giant party they host for the community. Thanks!
Mission Trip! Baton Rouge, LA is the place to be for more storm clean up. A group of up to 20 (from all over the Detroit Presbytery) is going back to Louisiana. They were hit with severe flooding last August and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance set up a church to accept volunteers. Skilled in construction or not, your help is needed November 11-19. Click here for the flyer about the “Baton Rouge 2017” trip or pick up a flyer in the lobby. You can also email Frank Palazzolo to learn more.
Come see what it’s all about. The Mercado is a charitable food bank that operates as a grocery store. It is near Mexican Town with an immigrant target market. A family member shops by appointment and may fill a shopping cart with anything in the store. Limits on how much food in each category may be taken are set to make it fair for small families or large ones. Volunteers assist with interpreting these rules, re-stocking shelves and getting food into cars. Spanish or Arabic as a second language is a plus – but it is not required to help.
We work from 9:30 am to 1 pm. We will carpool from GPMC’s parking lot. The van will depart at 9.
When 12 GPMC members depart for Cuba on September 30, they bring with them the good wishes and donations from our entire congregation. Will you be part of this effort? Contributing one or two new or like-new items is a tangible way to participate in and support our adult mission trip to Cuba. We are looking for health care items, tools, sewing items, school supplies, sports, toys, music and art supplies.
Please bring them anytime before September 20 (our packing day) to the coat room in the lobby. If you miss the date, email Mary Lloyd or Joanne Difazio to see if special arrangements can be made.
The OUTREACH COUNCIL is MATCHING GIFTS TO Presbyterian Disaster Assistance
GPMC and PDA are helping with Harvey and Irma Disaster Relief. If you haven’t made that donation yet, GPMC Outreach Council recommends giving to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA). They have had our support for years as our members have donated money and helped on mission trips to Katrina Relief, Joplin Relief, and Sandy Relief.
We know they are already working with presbyteries in Texas and Florida and we want to help. The Outreach Council voted to MATCH all GPMC member donations until they total $10,000. Let your gift go that much further by writing the check to GPMC and putting PDA on the envelope or the memo line. Put in in the offering plate or in the box for donations that is in the lobby. You can do this throughout the month or until the goal is reached.
What else can you do? Shop! PDA is also collecting special buckets full of cleaning supplies to send to the affected areas.
Please fill a bucket with cleaning supplies. Bring it to the church by September 24. The Presbytery of Detroit plans to deliver 230 buckets to PDA headquarters in Little Rock, AK.
