Outreach at GPMC

Our prayers continue to be with the people of Haiti. Praise be to God for everyone who has been able to give to the relief effort, whether through  Presbyterian Disaster Relief on-line or other means.  In addition to financial gifts (over $6000 in January) and spiritual support (click here for resources for prayer), some of our members have either made or purchased some of the supplies for relief kits.  To date we have shipped over 300 relief kits.  Thank you to everyone who has helped respond to this tragedy.  Please continue to keep the people in Haiti in your prayers.

Central to Jesus' teachings in the Bible is the commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves. At GPMC, that love for neighbor takes many forms, including charitable gifts to other organizations, support of Christian missionaries around the globe, and volunteering with local outreach programs. In 2008, GPMC contributed to or volunteered with over 46 different organizations!

Click here to see a copy of our Outreach Council's full submission for the 2009 annual report. It includes more detail on groups supported and how they were supported.  We also have a listing of our outreach spending for all of 2009.

The most regular of our volunteer opportunities are:

  • Tutoring at the Wednesday afternoon program at Calvin East Presbyterian Church.

  • Serving Food at Ecumenical Theological Seminary's Everyone Eats program on the 4th and 5th Wednesdays of each month (9:30am – 12:30pm)

  • Serving food at Fort Street Presbyterian Church's Open Door program the 4th and 5th Thursdays of each month (8:00am – 12:00pm)

  • Participating in a monthly Habitat for Humanity build on the 2nd Saturday of every month.

On February 18, 2010, 6 disciples left Grosse Pointe for an exploratory adult mission trip to Honduras.  We pray that this trip will yield the opportunity to develop a long-term relationship with Christians in Honduras.  Dates have now been set for the next trip(s): January 26 - February 3, 2011 and February 12-19, 2011.  You can download a registration form here.  To learn more about the last trip, you can click here to see the slideshow from their trip.

We have also been participating in the Hurricane Katrina Relief trips organized by the Presbytery of Detroit. The final trip was in March, 2010.   Other trips are planned for 2010. For more information about these trips and other opportunities to serve through the Presbytery of Detroit, visit the Hands on Mission web page for the Presbytery.

We also collect a monthly "Hunger Offering," the total of which is matched by the Outreach Council up to $2,000. This offering assists local and international agencies who work on hunger related causes.

GPMC also supports international mission by praying for and contributing to the work of missionaries like Dr. Mike and Nancy Haninger.  You can see their Power Point presentation and other information about their ministry in the Congo here.  Since this file is rather large, you can click here for a smaller PDF about some of their projects.

For more information about any of these outreach opportunities, please email Martie Neily at mneily@gpmchurch.org or call the church office (313) 882 5330.
