Second Mile Center – Spring Clean-Up on May 22

Are YOU ready for summer?  The Second Mile Center needs our help to be ready for summer programs.

Choose a focus area you like, bring the tools you need, wear your mask, and make a lasting change.

All volunteers should meet at SMC at 9 am on May 22.  Plan to work until noon.

Second Mile Center is at 18391 Morang, Detroit, 48205

Choose a job from the six options below when you sign up at this link:

Yes! I want to help the Second Mile Center!

After you sign up, coordinate with our team leaders Howard Hill, Regina Gersch, or Julie Huellmantel ahead of May 22 about who is bringing what.  Second Mile Center doesn’t have tools.

THE JOBS AND THE TOOLS

GARDEN BEDS:  Trim the large bushes, weed the garden beds and spread mulch.  Bring gas or electric power trimmers and edgers, extension cords, nippers, shovels and other garden tools, garbage bags and mulch (about 20 bags, turn in receipts to Sue Acton) and wheelbarrow.  Don’t forget your own gloves!

PAINTING:  There are two doors and about 10-20 sq yds of wall in rough shape.  SMC has the exterior paint for the walls and black paint for the doors.  Bring exterior primer, steel scrapers and wire brushes, exterior caulk, sanding blocs, brushes, rollers, paint trays, painting tape and drop cloths.

WINDOWS AND WINDOW WELLS:  There are a half dozen window wells that have accumulated leaves and debris over the seasons and many windows (maybe 20?) that need washing.   Prioritize your time, do as many as you can.  Some of the windows will need a ladder to reach.  Bring a 16 ft. lightweight ladder if you have it, a step ladder if you don’t.  Bring your favorite window cleaner, squeegee, sponges, rags, garbage bags, shovels and hand shovels/rakes and gloves.

GUTTER CLEANING:  There is a gutter around the porch ceiling and a long gutter at the back of the building that need to be cleaned out.  16 ft lightweight ladder, gloves, garbage bags, hand shovels/rakes.

HOSPITALITY:  Someone has to bring the water and snacks.  Buy them ahead of time, bring the cooler, serve those who need it, and turn in your receipts to Sue Acton.

I’M A VOLUNTEER!  If you don’t have tools to contribute, no worries, we can still use your help.  Sign up and join in wherever you are needed.  Bring gloves and some garbage bags.
